GSO CAC/GL 31
Built on international scientific standards, not guesswork
FISH ID estimates freshness with the same references that quality labs and food authorities use, applied to a photo with AI.
QIMQuality Index Method
Developed in Tasmania, Australia, in the 1980s and now the European reference for fish inspection. An assessor gives each attribute (eyes, gills, skin, belly) 0 to 3 demerit points. The total rises almost linearly with days stored on ice, so it tells you how old the fish is.
In FISH ID: we apply the 8 attributes that are visible in a photo.
EU 2406/96EU freshness categories
Regulation (EC) No 2406/96 sorts fish on sale into freshness categories: Extra, A and B, with anything below unfit for human consumption. The grading uses the same signs: skin, eyes, gills and belly.
In FISH ID: we map the QIM points to an approximate grade in these categories.
FAO 348How fish change after catch
The FAO reference on fresh fish quality describes the stages of spoilage: eyes go from convex and clear to sunken and milky, gills from bright red to brown, skin loses its shine, and slime turns cloudy and then yellow.
In FISH ID: these are the changes the model looks for in the photo.
GSO CAC/GL 31Gulf standard for sensory evaluation
The Codex guidelines for sensory evaluation of fish in laboratories, adopted by the GCC Standardization Organization as GSO CAC/GL 31:2021. They set how fish are judged by appearance, odour and texture.
In FISH ID: odour and texture can't be measured from a photo, so the app reminds you to check them by hand.
How the technology works
- AI vision: a multimodal vision model (Claude by Anthropic) compares the photo with the 447 species in the KSAFish encyclopedia and returns a structured answer with a reason for each choice.
- Fixed calculation: the model only scores each sign. The score out of 100 and the grade are computed by fixed code, so the same points always give the same result.
- More than one photo: you can add close-ups of the eye and gills. Signs that aren't visible are left out instead of guessed.
- Honestly: this is a visual estimate. We are now calibrating it with photos from Saudi markets whose age in days is known.
